During this project, we were supposed to draw a self portraits, a.k.a the most terrifying thing for an artist. We had to start with a grid, and take a picture of ourselves. Then we placed a grid over the picture, and had to draw the portions of the face depending on that corresponding square. Eventually, I ended up giving up on the grid, and decided to just go based on what I already knew about making portraits, so I consider that trying something new. Now that I look at it, I shouldn't have been scared of adding shadows. It would have looked a lot better if I had added more, making it look more three dimensional, but I worried that it'd look dirty. The hair as well. But overall for a first self portrait, I'm proud of how it turned out.
This was a preparing activity that took only one class to get us ready for the self portrait project. Here we had the opportunity to learn about facial proportions and the placement of the facial features such as the eyes which are meant to be placed one third down and proportionate to the ears. It helped me learn more about the placement and I'm glad we did this.
